Hi, actually the balance is pretty decent..and there are reasons to play range versus melee..in the laning phase you dont need to trade damage as a melee againt an ranged because also you u dont really need to last hit minions..so even if u cant ''touch'' the enemy range commander it dosnt matter because you just stay in the lane near your tower and wait for enemy units to die.
and also range snipers are pretty squishy and they are very vulnerable to crowd control abilities...i play mostly only melee characters and i win 80% of my games or my lane.
keep in mind..if you play a melee character YOU DONT have to fight enemy ranged commander because you will get experience and shards only by staying near them when they die.
