Well, it is VERY easy to make melee characters to weak, or too strong. Think of them as a constant science experiment that is never quit finished. They are always being tested little by little just to make sure they aren't over-powered, or under-powered, but in the middle of it all. Those who have played League have heard the horror stories of first-release Xin Zhao, of which he had so much damage and survivability, he couldn't ever be stopped by anyone. So nerfs came, and he got toned back. The ranged characters always steal the spotlight first because they can be somewhat easier to balance.
So really what this whole thing is, just be patient, and the melee characters should turn out much better in the later stages of the game.
